Today, more pulp science fiction. Black Star is a nifty little game that is in the vein of Star Wars. But with serial numbers removed.
Character creation is pretty straight forward. Choose a species and choose two archetypes. You have ten skills that start at 1 and you have 10 more points to split between them. There are also talents. Characters start with 5. Each archetype is a talent in itself. You choose a one talent listed under each of your beginning archetypes and you get a free choice. Then you gear up. You also start with 7 Resolve. Resolve is a combination of hit points and hero points.
The system is a 2d6 + Skill =>9. Hurm. A lot like BoL. No wonder I'm attracted to it. There are also bonus and penalty dice.
The Mystic archetype substitutes for Jedi and Will for the Force so that is covered. And there is the mighty Beamsword!
The rulebook is heavy on character creation and rules with a several one page scenarios but not a lot of background otherwise. Not a criticism, just an observation. I haven't had the opportunity to play the game yet but it seems like it will be quick and fun. It does have a Companion booklet but I haven't purchased it yet.
The PDF of Black Star is pretty inexpensive, available on DriveThru for under $5.
