Today's entry in the Character Creation Challenge is for OneDice WWI. As I've written before, I reallylike the simplicity and versatility of the OneDice system. I know some do not like a game that relies on a single die (or calls itself "OneDice") but I happen to.
The character is an experienced British soldier in August of 1914. The British Expeditionary Force has just landed in France. They have not experienced any major fighting yet.
William "Angie" Anguish is a 20 year veteran of the British Army. However, unlike when he was a recruit, only his closest friends call him by the forced nickname Angie anymore. And only then if you are at least a sergeant. It is early August, 1914 and Sgt. Anguish is part of the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, 9th Brigade of the BEF, newly landed in France. Anguish is not as enthusiastic about the war as everybody else seems to be. And he's certain it won't be "Over by Christmas!" He believes everyone - civilians, politicians, his fellow soldiers, particularly the brass- are underestimating the coming fight. Mechanization has increased the killing power of Man. Anguish had been at Omdurman as a private. He had seen the charnel carnage the Maxims had caused. The coming war was going to be for worse. With the Maxims, the modern artillery, the large armies. Death was afoot. But he couldn't complain. Not where the officers or men could hear. All he could do is prepare his men as well as possible.
