I've had a copy of
The Black Hack for quite some time but only took a close look at it comparatively recently. Well, in the last couple of years. Turns out I really like it. It's another rules-lite game that is flexible and easy to jump into. And I like my rules-lite games. Character creation is simple, the main mechanic is simple and you can easily use old school adventures with little conversion. I also like that people have taken it and applied it across genres and styles. So, within fantasy, it emulates early D&D, it's been modified to Tolkien style fantasy, sword & sorcery and weird fantasy, to name a few. Outside of straight fantasy, it has been used for science fiction, post-apocalypse, noir and horror.
There have been original adventures written for it, including solo adventures. There have been a large number of supplements written for it. These range from bestiaries and new classes to sandbox assistants. I haven't taken a look at 2nd edition because I'm satisfied with 1st but I'm sure I will at some point. I like to use it for one shots, pick up games and loose campaigns that are played irregularly.
